A preliminary Lebanese understanding advanced the armistice process, while a complaint about الفالوجة AL-FALUJA demanded examination of whether civilian guarantees had been honored.
What preceded the final Lebanese armistice?
Yosef Klir’s 1952 compilation places a preliminary eight-article understanding at Ras En Naqoura at about 18:30 after eight hours of talks. This is later source evidence about March 20; the original preliminary draft remains unheld. The final treaty followed March 23. Evening timing likely belongs to 20 Adar rather than this recap’s daytime 19 Adar, and the preliminary stage is not an additional general armistice.1
Why did the Arab League invoke الفالوجة AL-FALUJA guarantees?
Azzam’s March 20 cable accused Israeli forces of confiscation, killing and coerced departure after the Egyptian withdrawal. The complaint study compares the allegations with signed guarantees and Morris’s independently researched account of intimidation. The French cover is March 25 and the unofficial English release March 23. Neither later publication supplies the dates of every act alleged.23
What did other diplomatic reports propose?
A UN cable sent March 21 reported Syrian willingness to enter armistice talks conveyed by March 20. It does not date the original Syrian decision precisely or establish a signed armistice. JTA’s March 20 report also described Moshe שרת SHARETT proposing an exchange involving Arab refugees and יהודים YEHUDIM in Arab jurisdictions. That proposal was not a completed population exchange, did not establish individual consent and did not make the communities’ circumstances identical.45
How is this dated?
This is the series’ civil-day recap for 1949-03-20, Day 477. The date register and TJD’s fixed-Hebrew conversion assign its daytime portion to י״ט באדר ה׳תש״ט 19th 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709; after local sunset the date is כ׳ באדר ה׳תש״ט 20th 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709. The recap route does not date every incident it describes. Klir dates the preliminary understanding to March 20 about 18:30, likely after sunset. The Arab League cable is dated March 20 but circulated March 23/25. The Syrian response is known by March 20, not securely first decided that day. 6789
