The Lebanese general armistice took effect at signature. A separate secret Transjordan agreement set conditional future transfers and residence guarantees.
What did the Lebanese treaty establish?
The general armistice took effect at signature and defined a military line along the international boundary. It required force reductions, mine clearance and exchange of prisoners. The treaty’s commission had five members, and its prisoner deadline was 24 hours. These legal provisions correct seven-member and 48-hour claims without establishing actual compliance or diplomatic recognition.12
What did the secret Transjordan agreement promise?
A separate secret agreement concerned future adjustments on the Iraqi-held front. Transfers were staged after the future general armistice and depended on ratification. The diplomatic summary promised residence, property and freedom for affected villagers; departure and compensation clauses did not prove every family could remain safely or every person who left did so voluntarily.3
What do the earlier consultations show?
The prime minister’s diary describes talks into the early morning and signature still anticipated. Stabler’s 4 p.m. report describes the Transjordan ruler’s fear of renewed fighting and prospective displacement. The next day’s telegram records the March 23 signature. The feared 15,000 refugees were a forecast, not a documented removal that day. The sequence shows military leverage behind the settlement while leaving implementation and individual household outcomes to later records.456
How is this dated?
This is the series’ civil-day recap for 1949-03-23, Day 480. The date register and TJD’s fixed-Hebrew conversion assign its daytime portion to כ״ב באדר ה׳תש״ט 22nd 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709; after local sunset the date is כ״ג באדר ה׳תש״ט 23rd 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709. The recap route does not date every incident it describes. The treaty and later diplomatic report establish March 23 signatures. Earlier inspected Hebrew reportage securely places the Lebanese ceremony in daytime; the secret agreement’s signing clock remains unknown. Overnight consultations began before the diary entry and do not establish that clock. 78910
