Territorial negotiations remained unsettled as Syrian representatives pressed the refugee-return question.

Why was the March 23 agreement still unsettled?

Wells Stabler reported at noon that the secret territorial agreement awaited approval by the prime minister of the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan. He attributed to ruler Abdullah a fear that refusal would lead to Israeli force against Iraqi positions and larger demands. The same telegram records Moshe שרת SHARETT’s assurance that no hostilities were intended on that front.1

Stabler’s sharply critical assessment is a diplomat’s interpretation. It does not independently establish an Israeli offensive order or that every proposed territorial change had occurred. Security and military leverage were influencing negotiation while decisions remained incomplete.

What did the Syrian representative demand?

Farid Zein ed Din urged the commission to implement Resolution 194’s refugee provisions without awaiting a final territorial settlement. The commission’s chairman defended its urgency while noting that changing lines would affect where people returned. This meeting records competing approaches to repatriation and negotiation, not a completed return or a census of refugees’ wishes.2

Why is a settlement lead not a March 26 founding?

Klir’s March 24 entry says former defenders of כפר דרום KFAR DAROM in a group called Netivot settled again yesterday, ordinarily March 23. Its location and original establishment record are unverified. The statement does not support a March 26 founding and cannot be silently identified with a later locality carrying the same name. The available wording describes an earlier resettlement; it does not establish a March 26 foundation.3

How is this dated?

This is the civil-day recap for 1949-03-26, Day 483 of the 599-day series. The register’s daytime fixed-Hebrew conversion is כ״ה באדר ה׳תש״ט 25th 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709. The civil-day slot does not place every reported occurrence on that Hebrew date: local after-sunset events belong to כ״ו באדר ה׳תש״ט 26th 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709, and issue dates remain distinct from earlier events.4

Stabler’s telegram is dated at noon March 26; the commission record separately dates the Syrian hearing March 26.56

Guided reflections

  • How do Stabler’s personal assessment, Abdullah’s fears and Sharett’s assurances establish different kinds of evidence?
  • Why does a named group not automatically identify a later locality with the same name?
