The כנסת KNESSET debated military government while US and UN officials considered pressure over refugees, territory and ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM.

What review did דוד בן־Gurion DAVID BEN announce?

דוד בן־Gurion DAVID BEN announced a review of military administration and freedom of movement for Arab residents. JTA also described disagreement over a separate parliamentary subcommittee. The fuller account distinguishes those bodies, the announcement and any eventual changes in permits or governance.1

How did Dean Rusk propose diplomatic pressure?

Dean Rusk’s top-secret memorandum suggested remarks for Dean Acheson’s meeting with Moshe שרת SHARETT. It connected territorial compensation, international supervision of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM, refugee repatriation and the pending UN membership vote. It was a proposed diplomatic approach, not evidence that an ultimatum had already been delivered.2

Its 800,000-refugee estimate cannot be read as 100,000 new departures since Truman’s 700,000 five days earlier. The source populations and counting methods are unestablished. The memo shows US officials considering pressure on restored sovereignty and refugee policy while armistice progress continued.

What objection did the committee for ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM propose?

At 10:30 the committee discussed reports of five ministries moving to ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. It recommended a letter and an official denial, while fearing that an ineffective protest would diminish the commission’s prestige. The ministry study links that discussion to March 30 drafting and the April 2 public release.3

JTA’s Turkish recognition announcement and refusal of an immigration official concern separate legal and administrative acts. Klir’s joint de jure description of the Republic of Turkey and the Swiss Confederation is not used to invent a new March 29 recognition event.456

How is this dated?

This is the civil-day recap for 1949-03-29, Day 486 of the 599-day series. The register’s daytime fixed-Hebrew conversion is כ״ח באדר ה׳תש״ט 28th 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709. The civil-day slot does not place every reported occurrence on that Hebrew date: local after-sunset events belong to כ״ט באדר ה׳תש״ט 29th 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709, and issue dates remain distinct from earlier events.7

The parliamentary report says today March 29, and the Jerusalem meeting gives 10:30. Rusk’s memorandum is a dated proposal, not a delivered ultimatum.8910

Guided reflections

  • How did Rusk propose using a membership vote to influence the state’s territorial and refugee decisions?
  • Why does a public review of military government require later orders before restrictions can be counted as removed?
