A Syrian military coup changed the unfinished armistice front as a vessel carried emigrants toward חיפה HAIFA.
How did the Syrian coup change the war’s diplomacy?
Husni al-Zaim’s forces displaced the civilian government overnight. The coup study compares the military communiqué’s democratic promise with the later powers concentrated in the command. March 31 reports recorded uncertainty about continuing talks; they do not establish a new battlefield attack or permanent collapse of negotiation.1234
Who departed from Istanbul?
JTA reported a Turkish state-owned vessel leaving Istanbul with approximately 500 יהודים YEHUDIM bound for חיפה HAIFA. The surviving ship-name transcription is damaged; the supplied research identifies Cumhuriyet, which remains provisional pending the original bulletin or port manifest. The dispatch dates departure, not arrival.5
The same account describes economy minister Cemil Sait Barlas welcoming trade. Recognition, emigration and commercial expectations could strengthen the state’s connections, but neither the anticipated trade nor each passenger’s eventual arrival is established by a departure dispatch.
What did the commission discuss with relief organizations?
At 16:00 the commission met Red Cross and Quaker representatives. They discussed funding, refugee return and how territorial adjustments might affect return opportunities. The chairman described an unfavorable Israeli response to large-scale repatriation during earlier contacts. That is an attributed account of negotiations, not a count of individual denied-return decisions.6
At 10:00 the commission requested a revised letter about ministries in ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM for signature later that day. The linked study preserves the unsettled dispatch and publication sequence.7
How is this dated?
This is the civil-day recap for 1949-03-30, Day 487 of the 599-day series. The register’s daytime fixed-Hebrew conversion is כ״ט באדר ה׳תש״ט 29th 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709. The civil-day slot does not place every reported occurrence on that Hebrew date: local after-sunset events belong to א׳ בניסן ה׳תש״ט 1st 𝑜𝑓 Nisan, AM 5709, and issue dates remain distinct from earlier events.8
The coup spans the night March 29–30; the ship report dates departure March 30, with arrival unestablished. UN meetings give 10:00 and 16:00.9101112
Guided reflections
- How does a military coup change the negotiating authority without itself proving a new attack?
- Which port and arrival records would turn the reported 500 passengers into an identifiable group who completed עלייה ALIYA?
