Davar's front page of 8 June 1967 announced the liberation of the Old City of ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM. The short banner stood beside the newspaper's masthead, while the larger battlefield headline below described the opening of Tiran and Israeli advances in Sinai and the West Bank. The original page survives in the National Library of Israel's newspaper collection.1
The word liberated located the city's change of control within a Jewish understanding of return. Israeli forces had entered the Old City on 7 June, restoring Jewish access to הכותל HAʾKOTEL after nineteen years of Jordanian exclusion. Jewish sacred memory and Jewish military agency were joined in the newspaper's announcement.2
The headline can sustain that historical claim without answering every question about the new situation. It does not describe the experiences of all the Old City's residents or settle the subsequent administration of its holy places. Those subjects need their own witnesses. Reading liberation as a Jewish historical judgment also requires identifying who returned, what access had been denied, and what became possible again.
The juxtaposition of sacred geography and military news matters. A reader encountered ירושלים YERUŜALAYIM alongside shipping access, territory, and armed forces. The front page made the restoration of access part of the nation's victory while retaining the wider war around it. The later law extending state authority was a separate act; the headline should not be made to announce legislation that had not yet occurred.
How is this dated?
The inspected Davar issue is dated 8 June 1967, or 29 Iyar 5727. This article records the newspaper's publication. The liberation it reports occurred on 7 June, or 28 Iyar. Keeping the two dates separate preserves the difference between an event and the next morning's presentation of it.3
Guided reflections
- What historical relationship makes liberated a substantive description of Jewish return to the Old City?
- Which questions about residents and holy places cannot be answered from a victory headline alone?
