an hour and a half, during which Ribbentrop appeared cheerful and was warmly welcoming, opening his conversation with me by saying: ‘We have long heard of your struggle, have always admired you and have regarded your “adventures” as we regard the legends of history.’

When the discussion turned to the Palestine question, Ribbentrop said that this question was of immense importance, a grave international issue with a great bearing on the world’s security and future, which must be treated with the utmost care and resolved with a justice to which the English attached no weight, for this country, ‘Palestine,’ was purely Arab, and its problem could only be resolved on that basis, whatever the circumstances.

Our conversation then turned to the movement in Iraq, and the minister expressed his great admiration and esteem for this valiant Arab movement, then said: ‘We wished that this movement had been delayed until a more suitable time, when we could have given it effective military assistance, because the great distance was a major obstacle that prevented supplies from reaching it, yet despite this, and despite our preoccupation with consolidating our occupation of the island of Crete and other countries of Eastern Europe, the Führer ordered the dispatch of as many warplanes and as much military assistance as we could provide, and we had prepared a quantity of French light weapons, including machine guns, rifles and ammunition, to send to Iraq, knowing that all this would be insufficient in relation to the enemy forces and equipment in the East, and we were deeply pained by what happened to those brave friends in Iraq, whose strength we had wanted to preserve until the appropriate time arrived.’

I understood from his remarks, and someone with inside knowledge later confirmed this to me, that he was angry with Dr. Grobba and some of his assistants because he had heard that they had urged those leading the movement in Iraq to launch it prematurely, and I assured the minister that the haste had not come from the Iraqis; on the contrary, the Iraqi government headed by al-Kaylani and the army commanders had wanted to avoid any friction with the English until the appropriate time arrived and the Axis states had recognized the independence of the Arab countries and a full agreement had been reached on political and military principles, but the English regarded this government and the army commanders as obstacles to their desire to harness Iraq, its army and all its wealth and means of communication to their colonial interests and to use Iraqi territory as bases for concentrating British armies, contrary to the provisions of the Iraqi-British treaty, and it was they who had engineered this strife and committed the treacherous aggression against Iraq, and I drew his attention to the statement Mr. Churchill had made after the aggression

Analysis

This page records Ribbentrop’s reported response to the Palestine question and the Iraqi movement, including claims of Arab ownership of Palestine, German sympathy, promised military aid, prepared French weapons, and disagreement over the timing of the Iraqi revolt. It is especially significant for the source’s account of German strategic limits, its attribution of premature action to Grobba and his assistants, and its accusation that Britain engineered the conflict to use Iraq for colonial military purposes. The page ends by introducing a Churchill statement that continues onto page 106. These statements, causal claims, and attributions remain source-owned and are not independently verified here.
