And His word: “O you who believe, take your precautions, then go forth in groups or go forth all together.” And His exalted word on the need to prepare for the enemy and guard against him, even during prayer, addressing the Prophet, peace be upon him: “When you are among them and lead them in prayer, let a group of them stand with you and let them take their weapons. When they have prostrated, let them be behind you, and let another group who have not prayed come and pray with you, taking their precautions and weapons. Those who disbelieve wish that you would neglect your weapons and your baggage so that they could attack you all at once.” And His word: “Do not weaken in pursuing the enemy. If you suffer, they suffer as you suffer, but you hope from God what they do not hope.” We have occupied ourselves with hoarding money, increasing wealth, building structures and undertaking luxury projects, heedless of the surrounding danger and the enemy lying in wait. We are like someone who creates a garden containing every kind of fruit and then leaves it without a guard or wall, making it divided plunder and easy prey for covetous enemies.

The pre-Islamic Arab poet Laqit al-Ayadi was more rational, perceptive and far-sighted than the Arab nation in its present generation. In a poem he composed fourteen centuries ago, warning his people against their enemies, he said the following:

O rider urging on his mount, traveling to the peninsula, seeking and advancing,

Tell Iyad, and explain to its leaders: I see the right course, if I am not disobeyed, has become clear.

How I pity myself if your affairs are divided, while the affairs of men are best when united.

Do you not fear a people, no father to you, who have come upon you swiftly like locusts?

Every day they sharpen spears against you; they do not sleep when the heedless sleep.

Plowing does not occupy them; they see no pasture or satisfaction apart from your stronghold.

Yet you foolishly plow the earth, building fields in every worked plot.

Why do I see you asleep in ease and comfort, when you can see the meteor of war shining?

Bring out your steeds and protect your honor; put on patience, not alarm.

Do not submit to humiliation before the enemies; if they prevail, they will seize you and the whole community.

By God, wealth has never ceased, from earliest times, to bring its owners calamity when they are struck.

My people, do not let your stronghold be afflicted; I fear for it a crushing calamity.

It is the affliction that destroys your root. Who has seen or heard of counsel like this?

Analysis

This page continues the memoirist’s religious and military exhortation, quoting Quranic passages about readiness and warning against Arab wealth without defense. It then reproduces a long pre-Islamic poem about vigilance, unity and preparation for war. The page is significant because religious instruction, political criticism and poetic warning are woven into one argument for permanent mobilization. The quotations are translated as source material and are not independently verified. The poem continues on printed page 152.
