The minarets and pulpits resounded with lament for you, and kingdoms wept and mourned for you. India, distraught, and Egypt, sorrowful, weeping for you with abundant tears. Syria asks, and Iraq and Persia: “Has some eraser erased the caliphate from the earth?” Alas for a free woman buried alive, killed without crime or offense. Those whose war had healed your wounds killed you through their peace, without wounds. They tore with their own hands the robe of their honor, embroidered with the gifts of the Bestower. They stripped from necks the finest necklace and removed from shoulders the finest mantle. I ask forgiveness of morals; I am not ungrateful to the one whom I used to defend and oppose on behalf of. Why should I burden him with blame, when for so long I adorned him with the praises I had inherited? Truth has greater claim to reverence than your protector, and is more deserving than you of support and struggle. Offer the conqueror advice, and he will take heed: a thoroughbred returns after bolting. Delusion gave the president wine with its own hand; how will you outwit one overcome by wine? The obedience of the masses and a state deceived him, and eccentricities find in him a comfortable inclination.

Until he says:

You will hear in every land a caller calling to the liar or to Sajah, and you will see in every land a tribulation in which religion is sold with easy license. He gives legal opinions for the gold of al-Mu'izz and his sword, and for the desires of souls and their insistent hatred.

In Shawqi’s verses we can feel the confusion and astonishment caused by Mustafa Kemal’s abolition of the caliphate and repudiation of Islam. Shawqi thought that the reason lay in the arrogance that had overtaken him, in the obedience of the masses, and in his assumption of rule over the state. For that reason he urged that he be advised:

“Offer the conqueror advice, and he will take heed: a thoroughbred returns after bolting.”

Had Shawqi known the facts at the time, he would have understood that British coercion and Curzon’s conditions were the chief reason for what Mustafa Kemal did, and that advice would have been of no use to him after he had been compelled to accept Curzon’s conditions.

What further confirms the uselessness of advice is that the Khilafat Association, which represented the Muslims of India,

Analysis

This page preserves the second half of Ahmad Shawqi’s lament for the abolition of the caliphate, followed by the author’s claim that British coercion and Curzon’s conditions made advice to Mustafa Kemal useless. It then opens the account of the Indian Khilafat Association’s delegation to Ankara. The poem is especially significant because it frames the abolition as a death, a political and religious rupture, and a betrayal after Turkish military victory. The prose presents coercion as the decisive explanation and attributes the account to the author’s own historical judgment. These are source-owned claims; the poem, the delegation, and the causal claim require independent historical review.
