and we asked him, “Are you on leave?” He smiled and lifted the cover from his body. One of his legs had been amputated above the knee. He said, “This is my leave.” When we offered him a cigarette, he reached for it with visible eagerness and said, “I have not smoked a single cigarette for ten days.”

On our journey from Berlin to Bad Gastein, we passed through the city of Nuremberg. It was a desolate ruin, although we had known it as a place of construction, prosperity, constant activity, and splendid buildings. After the war, the Allies selected it as the center for the trial of the leaders of Germany and others whom they called “war criminals,” and they sentenced many of them to death or life imprisonment.

I have previously mentioned in these memoirs that the Jews, and the leaders of some Western states who supported them, demanded that I be tried at the Nuremberg Court as a war criminal, on the charge of exterminating the Jews and forming two military units from the Muslims of Bosnia, now Yugoslavia, to fight the Allies. Their attempts failed, and I will return to the details of this incident elsewhere, God willing.

This was the condition of Germany in the final years of the war and when it ended: air raids, destruction, battles in the air, on land, and at sea, and deprivation. Despite all this, order, patience, and obedience prevailed among the German people, and the food-distribution system remained in force. German popular organizations issued statements and circulars to the German people asking them to extend a helping hand to their refugee and needy brothers because of the harsh conditions of the war. Assistance was to be given according to one’s ability, whether in money, clothing, a slice of bread from a loaf, or anything a person could provide. They also asked members of the public to help the elderly and infirm, carry those unable to walk, carry children and belongings belonging to the weak who arrived by train or car, guide them to shelters, and provide every service they could, even sweeping rooms and cleaning places.

In sum, the German people are a great people. They combined knowledge and art with courage and valor, order and obedience, cooperation, sacrifice, selflessness, and other qualities with which a people that won the world’s admiration and esteem was endowed. There is no doubt that the Palestinian people, and every people that struggles and fights to seize its rights and recover its homeland from the hands of usurpers, must possess the qualities that equip it for the great work that

Analysis

This page completes the wartime travel narrative, records the author’s description of Nuremberg and the proposed war-crimes prosecution, and praises German social order, assistance to refugees, and national qualities. It then extends those qualities into a general prescription for Palestinians and other peoples seeking to recover their homelands. The page is especially significant because it combines personal witness, self-defense, political accusation, and idealized national characterization. The claims about the Nuremberg case, Jewish and Western-state responsibility, German relief practices, and the author’s role remain source-owned and require independent verification. The final exhortation continues on page 230.
