وفي ١٥/٦/١٩٤٦ أعلمت وزارة البحرية البريطانية أن المدمرة «فيراجور» أوقفت السفينة «ديفونشير» وهي من سفن النقل على مسافة من بورسعيد وفتشتها لاحتمال أن يكون المفتي على ظهرها.. وبعد أن وصفت الوزارة في بيانها عملية التفتيش بأنها إجراء عادي فرضه فرار المفتي من فرنسا قالت: «وتتخذ الحكومة كل التدابير الممكنة لمنع المفتي من الوصول إلى الشرق الأوسط».

وفي لبنان تحدثت الصحف بإسهاب عن حادث خروجي من فرنسا وأبدى الشعب اللبناني اهتماماً للحادث لا يقل عن اهتمامه لحادث خروجي من المانيا ومطالبته الحكومة اللبنانية بالسعي لإخلاء سبيلي وعدم الحد من حريتي وإعادتي إلى الوطن العربي كما أعربت عن ذلك مذكرة زعماء لبنان وأهل الرأي والفكرة التي حملها الوطني الغيور الشهم السيد محمد رستم طيارة أمين سر «الشباب الوطني» إلى دولة رئيس الوزارة اللبنانية. ومن الحق والواجب أن أنوه بالموقف الوطني الرائع الذي وقفه «الشباب الوطني» وأمين سره السيد طيارة من قضية فلسطين وتأييـدها في سائر أدوارها، وهو موقف كشف عن وجه لبنان الحقيقي بدعمه شعب فلسطين في جهاده الشريف ومحنته الكبرى بالاستعمار والصهيونية.

On 15/6/1946, the British Admiralty announced that the destroyer Virago had stopped the Devonshire, a transport vessel, at a distance from Port Said and searched it on the possibility that the Mufti was aboard. After the Admiralty described the search in its statement as an ordinary measure required by the Mufti’s escape from France, it said: “The government is taking every possible measure to prevent the Mufti from reaching the Middle East.”

In Lebanon, the newspapers spoke at length about my departure from France, and the Lebanese people showed an interest in the incident no less than their interest in my departure from Germany and their demand that the Lebanese government work to secure my release, not restrict my freedom, and return me to the Arab homeland. This was also expressed in the memorandum of the Lebanese leaders and people of opinion and thought, which the devoted and valiant patriot Mr. Muhammad Rustum Tayara, secretary of the National Youth, carried to the Lebanese prime minister. It is right and necessary for me to note the remarkable patriotic position taken by the National Youth and its secretary, Mr. Tayara, on the Palestine cause and its support through all its stages. That position revealed Lebanon’s true face through its support for the people of Palestine in their noble struggle and great ordeal under colonialism and Zionism.
