وحدث أن زار الرئيس جمال عبد الناصر مواقع كتيبة فلسطين في قطاع غزة، في عيد الفطر المبارك عام ١٣٧٥ هـ (مايو ١٩٥٦) وألقى في جنودها كلمة قال فيها:

«إن اسم فلسطين لم يمت ولن ينسى، إنكم تكونون قاعدة جيش فلسطين، وأن مسؤوليتكم عظيمة في معناها ودلالاتها»، ثم زار قيادة الجيش الفلسطيني وتفقد صفوف الجنود وألقى كلمة أخرى قال فيها:

«إني واثق بأن الجيش الفلسطيني سوف يثبت جدارته، إني أريدكم أن تعرفوا أن كل ما قيل من أن أهل فلسطين لم يحسنوا الدفاع عن وطنهم، كلام مقصود به الخداع والتضليل، لقد جربتكم بنفسي وأنا أعرف أكثر من غيري حقيقتكم، إن الذين قاتلوا منكم معي قاتلوا بشرف، والذين ماتوا منكم أمامي ماتوا بشرف، كذلك عرفت أهل فلسطين بنفسي ورأيتهم بعيني، وليس ذنبهم أنه لم يكن في أيديهم سلاح، وكانت أيدي أعدائهم مليئة به. لقد انتهى ذلك كله الآن، لقد أصبح السلاح في أيديكم وأنا واثق أن الجيش الفلسطيني سيكتب باسم فلسطين صفحة مجيدة في التاريخ».

وعلى الأثر أبرقت باسم الهيئة العربية العليا بتاريخ ٤ شوال ١٣٧٥ (١٤/٥/ ١٩٥٦) برقية شكر وتقدير إلى سيادته لتقرير هذه الحقائق المشرقة عن الفلسطينيين والجهاد الفلسطيني، فتلقيت من سيادته البرقية التالية:

It happened that President Gamal Abd al-Nasser visited the positions of the Palestine Battalion in the Gaza Strip on the blessed Eid al-Fitr in the year 1375 AH (May 1956) and addressed its soldiers, saying:

“The name of Palestine has not died and will not be forgotten. You are the foundation of the Palestinian Army, and your responsibility is great in its meaning and implications.” He then visited the headquarters of the Palestinian Army, inspected the ranks of the soldiers, and delivered another address, saying:

“I am confident that the Palestinian Army will prove its worth. I want you to know that everything said about the people of Palestine being unable to defend their homeland was intended to deceive and mislead. I tested you myself, and I know your reality better than anyone else. Those among you who fought alongside me fought honorably, and those among you who died before me died honorably. I also came to know the people of Palestine myself and saw them with my own eyes. It is not their fault that they had no weapons in their hands while the hands of their enemies were full of them. All of that has now ended. Weapons are in your hands, and I am confident that the Palestinian Army will write, in Palestine’s name, a glorious page in history.”

Thereupon, in the name of the Arab Higher Committee, I sent His Excellency a telegram of thanks and appreciation on 4 Shawwal 1375 (14 May 1956), for stating these bright truths about the Palestinians and the Palestinian jihad. I received the following telegram from him:
