Now, let us make every effort for twenty years to reach the Jews’ level. She said to him: “Will the enemies wait for us for twenty years to reach their level? What is the ratio of technology between Algeria and France, and between Vietnam and the United States of America?”

Then the claim that we defeated them three times is one of the effects of the psychological warfare the enemies wage against us. In the 1948 war, the Zionists did not possess heavy weapons or warplanes. All they had was a small number of civilian aircraft for training, and in some circumstances they dropped some bombs by hand from civilian aircraft. Some Arab states, such as Egypt and Iraq, had air forces commanded by Arab pilots. Some of those pilots were graduates of the aviation institute established by the great man Talaat Harb. At the time, I learned from official sources that a squadron of Egyptian warplanes bombed some military targets in the port of Tel Aviv, causing terror and panic among its inhabitants. A large number of them, estimated at tens of thousands, fled to Netanya, Hadera, and Haifa, and this situation continued for several days. The British and Americans intervened from the first day, objecting to the Egyptian aircraft bombing “Israel,” which did not possess warplanes, and asking the Arab states that the task of their armies be police work rather than war. The British army at that time consisted of about one hundred thousand soldiers stationed in the Suez Canal.

Just as the Zionists did not then have warplanes, they also had no tanks or field artillery. They used only mortars.

The Fall of Tiberias:

On 18 April 1948, the city of Tiberias fell into Jewish hands, about one month before the date of the British colonial government’s withdrawal from Palestine.

Events between the Arabs and Jews in the Tiberias area began at the start of April 1948. The Jews in Tiberias had spread several settlements across the high ground overlooking the town and supplied them with weapons and police, in cooperation with the British authorities.

At the beginning of that month, police officers in the Jewish settlements began confronting Arabs on their way to Tiberias and as they left it, searching for weapons. For this reason, clashes took place between the Arabs and Jews on 11 and 12 April 1948. Shots were fired, and some people were killed and wounded.

Analysis

Page 484 continues the source’s psychological-warfare argument and then opens its account of the fall of Tiberias. The page presents a comparison between Arab and Jewish technological capacity, claims that Arab air attacks caused a large civilian flight from Tel Aviv, and argues that the Zionists lacked heavy weapons, warplanes, tanks, and field artillery in 1948. These are claims made by the memoirist and are not independently established by this page alone.

The Tiberias section dates the city’s fall to 18 April 1948 and attributes the preceding clashes, Arab casualties, Jewish casualties, British intervention, and Jewish settlement armament to the actors named in the source. The passage is especially significant for its account of British conduct. It says that British forces fired on Arabs while British authorities claimed neutrality, and that British forces helped encircle Tiberias and prevent Arab reinforcement. The page also frames the evacuation as an English effort to remove Arabs from Tiberias, linking it to the later evacuation of Haifa. The closing reference to a British military source reporting more than two hundred Jewish dead is a source attribution within the memoir, not a verified casualty count in this record.
