Shots were fired, and some people were killed and wounded. The British army intervened, opening heavy fire on the Arabs and wounding a number of them. During the three days, fighting raged between the Arabs and Jews. The British army intervened again, ordering the fighting to stop. The Arabs stopped firing, but the Jews continued and did not stop until later. The Jewish losses were heavy, and the Arabs in Tiberias fought bravely. They attacked the Jewish lines that were raining machine-gun fire on them and disabled some of them. About twenty Arab men and women were killed, most of them by British army fire. This contradicted the British authorities’ claim that they stood in a position of neutrality. No fewer than thirty-five Jews were killed, and more than seventy were wounded.

On 12 April 1948, the late Sheikh Naif al-Tayibi came to the command of the Holy Jihad in Nazareth and informed it that fighting was taking place in Tiberias and that the Jews had cut all transportation routes between the Arabs in Tiberias and the neighboring villages, trying to prevent any aid from reaching them. As a result, the commander of the Holy Jihad force in Nazareth, Sheikh Tawfiq Ibrahim, sent a force of mujahideen to Tiberias. It succeeded in reaching Tiberias and reinforced the fighters there. Fighting continued until 18 April 1948. In the battle of Tiberias, the Jews used mortars and mine-launchers and shelled the Arab defensive positions with them. Despite this, the Arab positions held. The Jews, however, tightened the dangerous encirclement of Tiberias with the help of British forces, thereby preventing any reinforcement from reaching the Arabs.

When the situation in Tiberias worsened, its inhabitants were forced to withdraw because the Arab force there was insufficient to protect it.

The British commander urged the Arabs to evacuate Tiberias, and the Jews tried to disarm the Arabs, but they refused. Finally, the British commander informed the Arabs that they could leave with all their weapons, and Tiberias was evacuated on 18 April 1948. The Arab areas quickly transported the Arabs by car from Tiberias to the Arab areas, claiming that they were protecting them from Jewish violence in Tiberias. Thus the English worked hard to evacuate the Arabs from Tiberias, as they later did in evacuating the people of Haifa from it.

For this occasion, we reproduce here what a British military source reported: that Jewish losses in the battle of Tiberias exceeded two hundred dead.

Analysis

Page 485 continues the Tiberias account from page 484 and records the source’s description of the fighting, British intervention, Arab and Jewish casualties, the Holy Jihad reinforcement, the encirclement of the city, and the evacuation on 18 April 1948. The page is especially significant for the memoir’s claim that British fire caused most of the roughly twenty Arab deaths while British authorities presented themselves as neutral, and for its attribution of the city’s isolation to Jewish forces aided by Britain.

The page also says that Arabs were allowed to leave with their weapons, that Arab areas transported them away under the stated rationale of protecting them from Jewish violence, and that English policy worked to evacuate Arabs from Tiberias as it later did from Haifa. These are source claims about responsibility, motive, and population movement. The final sentence cites a British military source for a figure exceeding two hundred Jewish dead, but the cited source is not identified here well enough to verify the figure independently.
