عزيزي الأخ الحاج أمين

سلام عليك. وصلتني خطاباتك وإذا لم أصلك في الحين فليس ذلك إهمالا لشيء مما أشرت إليه. إن المعركة مع اليهود حاسمة جدا ووسائلنا محدودة ولكن عناية الله أعظم من كل شيء وهذه العناية ردت كثيرا من الكيد وأخذت [غير واضح] دوائر عديدة إنني أدافع تماما على أن الأمر ليس أمر ١٥٠٠ يهودي ولكنه المبدأ وقد أثرت الهجرة اليهودية وعلى بريطانيا أن تثبت وتحترم عهدها

سأسافر لأمريكا وسيعمل اليهود جهدهم لإحباط مساعي ولكن الله معنا ورضاؤه الذي نرجو أن يمنحنا أعظم من كل القوى. أيها الأخ اعلم أنه ليس في يدي شيء أستطيعه لا أعمل لإنقاذ أي عربي صغير ومجهول بل أي مسلم فإذا لم أدفعه فاعلم أن الطاقة بذلت. ولا أريد أن أقص عليك أنواع الوسائل التي الجأ إليها [غير واضح] أن الأمور لا تسير في الاتجاه الذي نريده ولكنه تقصيري في الكتابة قد يثير في النفس أنني ألهو فعلا.

كلمت أمس وزير المستعمرات طويلا في شأن جمال وكل الإخوان في كل الأقطار ووعد بالنظر وقلت له أن أهم صفات البريطانيين هي سعة الصدر وأنهم استطاعوا أن يجعلوا من أعدائهم أصدقاء، فضلا عمن لم يقصدوا إلى عدائهم مطلقا ولكن كل عدائهم موجه لليهود والصهيونية

وإني أعتقد أنه [غير واضح] وأنه تحل مسألتك في النظر بالكيفية المرضية لنا جميعا. قابلت [غير واضح] عدة مرات ووجدت فيه رجلا عاقلا ظريفا وقد نصح بتأجيل سفري لباريس شهرا آخر بسبب الانتخابات ولذلك لا أدري متى تكون مقابلتنا بعد عودتي من أمريكا. أدعو الله أن يرعاك وأن يوفقك والسلام عبد الرحمن عزام

Dear brother Hajj Amin,

Peace be upon you. I received your letters, and if I did not reach you at once, that was not negligence regarding anything to which you referred.

The battle with the Jews is very decisive and our means are limited, but God’s care is greater than everything. This care has thwarted much scheming and taken [unclear] many circles.

I am arguing fully that the matter is not a matter of 1,500 Jews but of the principle, and Jewish immigration has had an impact. Britain must uphold and respect its commitment.

I will travel to America, and the Jews will work hard to frustrate the efforts, but God is with us, and His favor, which we hope He will grant us, is greater than all powers.

Brother, know that there is nothing in my hands that I can do that I do not undertake to save any Arab, however small and unknown, but any Muslim. If I do not push him forward, know that every effort has been made. I do not want to tell you the kinds of means to which I resort, [unclear] that matters are not proceeding in the direction we want, but my failure to write may make one think that I am actually playing around.

Yesterday I spoke at length with the Colonial Secretary about Jamal and all the brothers in every country. He promised to consider the matter. I told him that one of the most important qualities of the British is breadth of mind, and that they have been able to make friends of their enemies, let alone those who never intended to be their enemies at all, but all their hostility is directed toward the Jews and Zionism.

I believe that [unclear] and that your matter will be considered in a manner satisfactory to all of us.

I met [unclear] several times and found in him a sensible, pleasant man. He advised postponing my trip to Paris for another month because of the elections, and therefore I do not know when our meeting will be after my return from America.

I pray that God protect you and grant you success. Peace.

Analysis

Page 538 contains a reproduced Arabic letter on Savoy Hotel London letterhead, signed by Abd al-Rahman Azzam. The translation preserves its claims about conflict with Jews, Jewish immigration, British policy, efforts on behalf of Amin, and an unnamed person, while retaining four unreadable spans as [unclear] and not supplying a date. These are claims within the reproduced letter, not independently verified findings. Page 537 precedes it and page 539 continues the reproduced-document appendix.
