his calling in the first person. Muhammad was nothing more than a mouthpiece of God; the Lord spoke, not he. He opposed only one dogma with complete determination, one about which Christians at the time were by no means agreed: O Isa, son of Mirjam, he declared, did you perhaps say to the people: set me and my mother beside the Lord of the world as gods? This deification appeared to him as a falsification of Jesus’s teaching, a relapse into polytheism, and the cause of all divisions within Christianity. He saw Christianity as the true religion revealed by God. Whenever people fell away from it or obscured it, the Ruler of the world, the “All-Merciful,” sent a messenger; more precisely, he graced a mortal with the proclamation of his will so that the pure faith might be restored. So it had been with Abraham, and so with Moses and Jesus. And now Muhammad had received the calling.... The task assigned to him, he saw solely as removing everything that had inserted itself between God and man. Every mediating function, whether through the deification of one of the prophets or through saints or priests, was to be abolished, and man and God were to be brought back into an immediate relationship. That is the core and origin of Islam, the only new thing Muhammad sought, if one can speak of anything new at all. Luther, as is well known, aimed at something very similar.”
Islam’s position toward Christianity, and therefore toward Christianity’s holy places, can be understood only if due account is taken of the fact that Islam never felt itself to be an enemy
