[Sayyid Qutb] it derives its existence, strength, and victory: the truth of the creed of faith, the method of faith, and the law of faith. This is the path. These are the landmarks of the path.

*

The Jews had their standing in Medina and economic ties and treaty commitments with its people. Their hostility had not become open, nor had the Muslims’ awareness yet matured that their creed alone was their covenant, their homeland, and the basis for dealings and agreements, and that no tie or bond could remain if it conflicted with the creed.

The Jews therefore had an opportunity to direct, cast doubt, and cause confusion. There were people in the Muslim community who listened to what they said and were influenced by it. There were people who defended them against measures that the Prophet, God’s blessings and peace be upon him, wanted to impose to protect the Muslim ranks from their schemes, as happened when Abd Allah ibn Ubayy interceded for the Banu Qaynuqa and spoke harshly to the Messenger, God’s blessings and peace be upon him, concerning them.

*

The enemies of the Muslim community did not fight it on the battlefield with sword and spear alone. They did not incite enemies against it to fight it with sword and spear alone. They first fought it in its creed. They fought it through insinuation, doubt, the scattering of suspicions, and the planning of maneuvers.

They first attacked the creed of faith from which its being had sprung and through which its existence was established. They set the tools of destruction and weakening to work upon it because they understood, just as they understand perfectly today (1), that this community can be overcome only through this point of entry

[Later compiler's note 5, continued on printed page 22] (1) Consider the campaign to cast doubt on the creed, and the atheist mobilization in an Arab army against faith in God, just before =
