[Sayyid Qutb] al-Nadiri, Hawdha ibn Qays al-Wa’ili, and Abu Ammar al-Wa’ili, together with men of the Banu al-Nadir and men of the Banu Wa’il, were the ones who rallied the coalition against the Messenger of God, God’s blessings and peace be upon him. They went to Quraysh in Mecca and called upon them to fight the Messenger of God, God’s blessings and peace be upon him. They said, “We will stand with you against him until we eradicate him.” Quraysh said to them:

“Assembly of Jews, you are the people of the first scripture and possess knowledge of that over which we and Muhammad now differ. Is our religion better, or his?”

They, the Jews, said, “Your religion is better than his, and you are more entitled to the truth than he is!”

They were the ones concerning whom God Most High sent down: “Have you not seen those who were given a share of the Book? They believe in sorcery and false gods, and they say of those who disbelieve, ‘These are better guided in their way than those who believe,’” through His words, Most High: “Or do they envy people for what God has given them of His bounty?”

When they said this to Quraysh, Quraysh were pleased and became eager for the war against the Messenger of God, God’s blessings and peace be upon him, to which they had called them, and they prepared for it.

God Almighty spoke the truth: “You will surely find that the people most hostile to those who believe are the Jews and those who associate partners with God.”

The form of the statement allows it to be an address to the Messenger, God’s blessings and peace be upon him, and also a general address expressed in general terms, because it contains an obvious and exposed matter that every person can find.

Once this is established, what draws attention in the wording is that the Jews are placed before those who associate partners with God in the statement that they are the most hostile to those who believe,
