[Qutb's text — collated Arabic] حقيقة الكتلة الإسلامية يحسن أن نعرف حقيقة الكتلة الإسلامية التي ندعو إليها ، وأهدافها الحقيقية كي نتجه اليها على بصيرة وهدى ونور . دعاني إلى الحديث على هذا النحو ما قرأته في جريدة الأهرام يوم الخميس الماضي على لسان الدكتور أحمد زكي رئيس مجلس فؤاد الأول للبحوث الفنية بعد أن أمضى شهراً في الهند وباكستان .. وقال : - « إن الهنود يعلمون عن مصر وسياستها أكثر مما يظن المصريون ولكنهم حساسون أكثر الحساسية من ناحية الباكستان فكانوا يسألونني دائماً : هل للمؤتمر الإسلامي غاية ! فكنت أقول لهم : ان الغاية من المؤتمر سياسية وليست دينية ، لسبب بسيط ظاهر هو أن أكثر الأمم المحتلة من حدود الصين إلى الاطلنطي أمم إسلامية . وقلت لهم : إن العرب كتلة صغيرة فلما شعرت بضعف مركزها أرادت أن تحتمي بكتلة أكبر وهي الكتلة التي يسمونها الكتلة الإسلامية وهذه الكتلة ستصغر نفسها في القريب فتحتمي بكتلة أكبر وهي الكتلة الإفريقية الآسيوية وأخصها الهند والصين ، فالتكتل ليس دينياً وإنما هو تكتل أمم مغلوبة ضد الاستعمار .

[Sayyid Qutb] The Reality of the Islamic Bloc

We should know the reality of the Islamic bloc to which we call, and its true aims, so that we may turn toward it with insight, guidance, and light.

What prompted me to speak in this way was what I read in al-Ahram last Thursday, quoting Dr Ahmad Zaki, president of the Fuad I Council for Technical Research, after he had spent a month in India and Pakistan. He said:

“The Indians know more about Egypt and its policy than Egyptians suppose, but they are extremely sensitive about Pakistan. They would always ask me: Does the Islamic Conference have an aim? I would tell them: The aim of the conference is political, not religious, for a simple and evident reason. Most of the occupied nations from the borders of China to the Atlantic are Islamic nations. I told them: The Arabs are a small bloc. When it became aware of the weakness of its position, it wanted to seek protection in a larger bloc, which is the bloc they call the Islamic bloc. This bloc will itself soon become small and seek protection in a larger bloc, namely the African-Asian bloc, especially India and China. The grouping is therefore not religious. It is a grouping of defeated nations against colonialism.”

These passages plainly show that Dr Zaki Bey has been influenced by the story about religion and politics and the differences between them. It is a familiar story and would not have caught my attention had a man of Dr Zaki Bey’s distinction and learning not repeated it with such simplicity. This indicates that some delusions that have no shadow
