[Qutb's text — collated Arabic] أين الطَّريق ؟ يوماً بعد يوم يزيد يقيني بتلك العقيدة .. ان هذه الأمة لن تصل إلى شيء ذي قيمة إلا أن تربى أرواحها وعقولها وجسومها تربية سليمة . إلا أن يربى كل فرد منها في محضن هادئ ثابت ذي أهداف مرسومة ، إلا أن يصبح كل فرد فيها وحدة سليمة قوية ذات عقيدة وذات طريقة وذات ضمير . ويوماً بعد يوم أفقد ثقتي بالحركات الشعبية الصاخبة والضجيج الذي يثور فجأة ثم يتبدد ويذهب . إني أؤمن بالشعب وأؤمن بهذا الشعب المصري خاصة ولكن الظروف السيئة المحيطة بهذا الشعب لا تدع لخصائصه الطيبة أن تعمل وحدها . ان ألف داء وداء تنخر في تكوين هذا الشعب . لهذا يجب أن تتم تربيته تربية سليمة نظيفة لكي تعطي خصائصه الطيبة كل ثمارها . ان ظروف هذا الشعب شاقة وطاحنة . وهو في حاجة إلى رصيد ضخم من القوة لكي يكافح هذه الظروف ويظهر عليها . وهذه القوة لا تتوافر له الآن لأن ظروفه السيئة تحرمه اياها . وهكذا يدخل هذا الشعب الكريم ذو الخصائص العالية الأصيلة في حلقة مفرغة .

[Sayyid Qutb] Where Is the Path?

Day after day, my certainty in this conviction increases: this nation will attain nothing of value unless its spirits, minds, and bodies receive a sound upbringing; unless every individual in it is brought up in a calm, stable setting with defined aims; and unless every individual in it becomes a sound, strong unit possessing a creed, a method, and a conscience.

Day after day, I lose confidence in clamorous popular movements and in the uproar that suddenly erupts, then dissipates and disappears.

I believe in the people, and I believe in this Egyptian people in particular. But the bad conditions surrounding this people do not allow its good qualities to work on their own. A thousand and one maladies gnaw at the constitution of this people.

For that reason, it must receive a sound, clean upbringing so that its good qualities may bear all their fruit.

This people's conditions are harsh and crushing. It needs a great reserve of strength to struggle against these conditions and overcome them.

This strength is not available to it now because its bad conditions deprive it of that strength. Thus this noble people, with its lofty and authentic qualities, enters a vicious circle.
