[Sayyid Qutb] this woman could be allowed to speak. Why all this?

Because Egypt supposedly cannot struggle unless empty, frivolous women press against men in demonstrations and celebrations, and because the self-sacrificing fighters supposedly will not enter the arena of struggle unless a flame of impulses burns in their bodies.

Who told this people that this is the path? It was told by those concerned only with flattering the basest instincts and most trivial impulses. The people listened to this flattery because they had not received a sound, stable education that taught them seriousness where seriousness is required and gave them clear aims and a marked path.

Here appears the value of calm, stable settings that tend to the spirit, mind, and body, that help each person overcome his weakness instead of flattering that weakness, and that prepare each person to find the best of the noble, lofty qualities in his nature instead of proceeding blindly amid the uproar.

The leaders of this new generation bear a responsibility. They must not be like their predecessors, the leaders of the generation that has grown old. They must try to educate this people, rather than devote all their concern to flattering its desires and impulses. It is a good people, an authentic people, and a people with deep roots, but hundreds of harmful factors have combined against it.

It must be rebuilt upon a sound and firm foundation so that we can wage the battles for liberation with resolve.

This is not one battle. There are many different battles. The people will not prevail in them unless they prevail over their weakness, desires, and impulses, and unless they know the aims and know the path.

I know that I am imposing a hardship upon the leaders. But no leadership deserves respect unless it can raise the people to its level and purify them, rather than
