[Qutb's text — collated Arabic] ترتكس هي معه أينما ارتكس بفعل العوامل السيئة التي تحيط به منذ مئات السنين . نحن في حاجة إلى زعماء بلا مجد ، وبلا شهرة ، وبلا بريق ، في حاجة إلى جنود مجهولين ، في حاجة إلى فدائيين حقيقيين لا يعنيهم أن تصفق لهم الجماهير ، ولا يعنيهم أن تكون اسماؤهم على كل لسان وصورهم في كل مكان .. إنما يعنيهم شيء واحد أن يقوموا بتربية هذا الشعب واعداده اعداداً هادئاً ثابتاً مكيناً متيناً . وإلى أن يوجد هؤلاء الزعماء وإلى أن يكثر المتخرجون في محاضن التطهير والتقويم .. إلى أن يوجد هؤلاء وهؤلاء ، فنحن لا ندعو إلى الصمت والسكون والانتظار .. كلا كلا إن عجلة الحوادث أسرع من الانتظار . فليمض كل في طريقه . وليتحرك هذا الشعب وليعمل نعم ليعمل رغم جميع الأخطار . ورغم استغلال المهرجين والطبالين والزمارين والمستنفعين والمتملقين لعواطفه . ولكن ليكن هذا الشعب على ثقة أن النصر الحقيقي لن يتم له إلا أن يتطهر . وإلا أن تكون له قيادة روحية تحاول رفعه إليها . وتعمل على تربيته تربية كاملة ، قيادة ذات هدف أبعد من استرضاء الجماهير ، ومن تملق الجماهير هدف ثابت تتجه اليه في قوة وفي ثقة وفي يقين حتى ولو انصرفت عنه الجماهير ! وهذا هو الطريق . ..

translation

[Sayyid Qutb] sink with them wherever they sink under the harmful forces that have surrounded them for hundreds of years.

We need leaders without glory, fame, or glitter. We need unknown soldiers. We need true self-sacrificing fighters who do not care whether the crowds applaud them, or whether their names are on every tongue and their pictures in every place. They care about only one thing: educating this people and preparing them calmly, steadily, securely, and firmly.

Until these leaders appear, and until the graduates of settings of purification and correction become numerous, until these and those appear, we do not call for silence, stillness, and waiting. No, no. The wheel of events moves faster than waiting.

Let each person proceed on his path. Let this people move and work. Yes, let them work despite every danger and despite the buffoons, drummers, pipers, profiteers, and flatterers who exploit their emotions.

But let this people be certain that true victory will not be complete until they purify themselves and have a spiritual leadership that tries to raise them to its level and works to educate them fully. It must be a leadership with an aim beyond pleasing and flattering the crowds, a fixed aim toward which it advances with strength, confidence, and certainty, even if the crowds turn away from it.

This is the path.
