[Sayyid Qutb] of war, except on this expedition. He declared its destination because of the great distance and the severe conditions. It was a time of intense heat, when the shade was pleasant, the fruit had ripened, and staying home appealed to the people. Signs of apprehension and hesitation then began to appear in Muslim society. The hypocrites also found their opportunity to discourage the people. They said, “Do not go forth in the heat,” made the people fear the great distance, and warned them of Roman might. These different factors caused some people to move sluggishly when called to go forth.

Those who stayed behind were threatened with the consequence of reluctance to fight jihad in God's cause. They were reminded of God's victory for His Messenger before any of them was with him, and of His power to repeat that victory without them. Then nothing would fall to them except the sin of staying behind and failing in their duty.

It is the weight of the earth, the earth's ambitions, and the earth's conceptions: the weight of fear for life, wealth, pleasures, and enjoyment; the weight of ease, comfort, and stability; the weight of the passing self, the limited term, and the near aim; the weight of flesh, blood, and dust.

Going forth for jihad in God's cause means release from the earth's fetter, rising above the weight of flesh and blood, realizing the higher meaning in the human being, making the element of winged longing in one's being prevail over the element of restraint and necessity, looking toward extended immortality, and deliverance from limited extinction.

No one with faith in God holds back from going forth for jihad in His cause unless there is a defect in the creed and weakness in its possessor's faith in it. God's Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, therefore says: “Whoever dies without having fought, or having thought of fighting, dies upon a branch of hypocrisy.” Hypocrisy, which is a defect in the creed that hinders it from
