[Sayyid Qutb] heights. Many are those exhausted by the road's length who fall behind the caravan and turn toward some trivial gain or cheap demand. Humanity knows many such people in every time and place. They are not a passing minority, but a recurring type.

They live on the margin of life, even if they imagine that they have obtained benefits, gained what they sought, and avoided paying the high price. A small price buys only what is trivial and cheap.

*

Some of these excuse-making laggards had tried to hold the staff in the middle, in the manner of hypocrites in every time and place. God rejected their maneuver and charged His Messenger to declare that their spending was not accepted by God, because they spent from hypocrisy and fear rather than faith and trust. Whether they gave willingly as a means of deceiving the Muslims, or unwillingly for fear that their affair would be exposed, in both cases it was rejected. It brought no reward and was not counted in their favor before God.

These people are a model of low aspiration and soft will. Many people fear hardships and recoil from effort, prefer cheap comfort to honorable toil, and prefer degrading safety to honored danger. They fall away in exhaustion behind the serious, advancing ranks that understand the cost of calls to faith. Yet these ranks continue along their road filled with obstacles and thorns because they instinctively understand that struggling against obstacles and thorns is part of human nature and is sweeter and more beautiful than sitting back, lagging behind, and accepting dull comfort unworthy of men.

Calls to faith need firm, upright, steadfast, determined natures that hold out through the long, arduous struggle. A rank infiltrated by weak, slack people does not hold out, because at the hour of hardship they fail it and spread discouragement and weakness
