across kingdoms and regions, and how they stretch out their arms to assist their brethren and support their people from beyond the seas and mountain peaks. The distance between their lands has not prevented them from continuing to exchange ideas and cooperating with dirham and dinar, by which every hope is realized and upon which every undertaking depends.

You who are content with inertia: raise your heads, fix your eyes, and observe what peoples and nations are doing. Listen attentively to what the world is saying about you. Are you willing to have it recorded in the newspapers of every state that the poor of the weakest of peoples—whom all governments expel from their countries—possess such knowledge and mastery of the methods of civilization that they can take possession of your country and colonize it, turning its masters into wage laborers and its wealthy into poor people?

Think about this matter and make it a subject of discussion, so that you may determine whether it is true or false, sound or untrue. Then, if it becomes clear that you have neglected the rights of your homelands and the service of your nation and religious community, examine, reflect, deliberate, confer, debate, and reason together about such a matter. It is more deserving of attention than inventing faults, fabricating defects, and fastening them upon innocent people; and it is more deserving of discussion than insolence and injustice toward your brethren. Good leaves no room for evil, and earnest purpose leaves no room for futility. None takes heed except one who turns to God. (Qurʾan 40:13)

Analysis

Riḍā completes his third lesson by presenting Jewish mutual aid as a model for action and a warning that יהודים YEHUDIM could acquire land and power in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL. He asks readers to test whether that warning is true and to address neglect of their own community. This is an early record of Riḍā's political concern. It does not prove the future outcome he asks readers to consider.
