A bombing struck the Rabbanite quarter of יהודים YEHUDIM in Cairo on September 22, 1948. It killed and injured residents during a campaign of attacks on the community and its property. Contemporary dispatches and later scholarship give different casualty counts. The event belongs to the regional history of the war and the exodus from Egypt; its casualties must remain separate from the tally within ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL.
What did the first dispatch establish?
JTA’s September 23 report, drawing on Reuters, gave nine dead and ten to twenty injured after blasts the previous day. It described police measures and affected streets. This is a contemporary preliminary count, not a named final death register. The original Reuters bulletin and Egyptian newspaper pages have not been collated. 1
The supplied report attributes fourteen deaths and forty-seven injuries to Le Monde on September 24. The page returned an access challenge in this ingestion, so those exact French figures remain an unverified report lead rather than a second inspected count. The newspaper’s publication date would in any case not move the bombing to September 24.
What does the later scholarship say?
Joel Beinin’s The Dispersion of Egyptian Jewry, published in 1998, describes the attack in chapter 4 as part of repeated assaults on residents and businesses. The publisher text states:
On September 22, an explosion in the Rabbanite Jewish quarter in Cairo killed nineteen and wounded sixty-two victims. 2
TJD attributes nineteen killed and sixty-two wounded to Beinin rather than declaring the numbers independently audited. His account differs from Reuters’s early count; named death, hospital and burial records would determine whether the increase reflects later confirmed deaths or another counting difference. The June attack on the Karaite quarter is a separate event.
What can be said about responsibility and protection?
Beinin places the bombing within a series of attacks targeting יהודים YEHUDIM and their property. He interprets the government’s weak response through its fear of the Muslim Brothers, rather than concluding that every official encouraged the assaults. That scholarly explanation is not identification of the men who placed this bomb. The original al-Kalim coverage and the 1950 trial record have not been inspected. 3
The wartime atmosphere did not make the residents combatants or justify attacks on their quarter. Responsibility belongs to the attackers and any established collaborators, not to every Egyptian or Muslim. Nor does a fatal bombing alone prove a specific departure, organized evacuation, expulsion or denial of return for each surviving family. The community’s later migration requires its own dated evidence.
How did the October 13 appeal describe the bombing?
The Congress appeal’s reported publication referred to this September 22 bombing and gave nineteen deaths and forty-seven serious injuries. That injury count is attributed to the appeal; it is not added to the other reported injury totals already discussed here. The original letter remains uncollated, and the October 13 dispatch’s damaged wording does not support a new casualty list. These are reports of this earlier crime, not new October 13 deaths. 4
How is this dated?
The source dates this action to 1948-09-22. The fixed Hebrew-calendar daytime conversion is י״ח באלול ה׳תש״ח 18th 𝑜𝑓 Elul, AM 5708, the working public occurrence route. Beinin independently assigns September 22. The existing daytime route is retained; the hour and any evening alternative remain unresolved. September 24 French publication is reportage, not occurrence. Where an occurrence hour is absent, an action after local sunset would belong to י״ט באלול ה׳תש״ח 19th 𝑜𝑓 Elul, AM 5708. 5 6

- Which records would reconcile a preliminary casualty dispatch with a later scholarly count?
- How can the targeting of a community be established without inventing the identity of individual bombers?
