צה״ל ẒAHAL opened Operation חורב ḤOREV in the afternoon, followed by nighttime ground action. Emigration administration and university requests showed civilian institutions operating alongside the offensive.

What began at 16:00?

The campaign study presents דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION’s timed opening and the distinction between operational planning and execution. Air and naval attacks targeted the western sector before the principal advance. A proposed target at El Arish did not establish Israeli occupation of that city or a completed strike at the planned hour. 1

The later account places גולני GOLANI near Outpost 86 around 23:00, already the next Ivrit day. The battle study separates that liberation from the following day’s counterattack and the commanders’ later telegram. 2

Who was affected by the fighting?

The official memorial dates the death of eighteen-year-old אפרים Weintraub EFRAYIM to December 22. It describes his parents’ deaths after Soviet wartime deportation and his arrival with the Tehran Children. That family history does not establish a claim that he was the last survivor of a family murdered in השואה HAʾŜOA (the Holocaust). His death clock remains unresolved against the reconstructed nighttime battle. 3

No verified civilian toll from opening bombardments is available. That gap cannot be filled with either an invented casualty estimate or an assertion that no civilians were harmed.

What changed in emigration administration?

JTA reported the Republic of Poland ordering closure of the emigration office called Palamt and transfer of its functions and files to the consulate of מדינת ישראל MEDINAT YISRAʾEL at Warsaw. This was a reported administrative change, not evidence that all emigration of יהודים YEHUDIM had been prohibited. 4

What did the university request?

Representatives of the university sought release of students and teachers from military service so that teaching could resume despite disrupted access to הר הצופים HAR HA’ẒOFIM. Their request makes the costs of mobilization to science and education visible; it does not establish that all requested releases occurred. יוסף קליר YOSEF KLIR also reported limited Christmas arrangements for Christians, without establishing unrestricted movement or the end of military government. 5 6

How is this dated?

This is Day 389 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-12-22. The Gregorian daytime date is converted to the fixed Ivrit calendar as כ׳ בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 20th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709. An occurrence after local sunset falls on כ״א בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 21st 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709. This daily route identifies the civil-day rundown; it does not assign every reported incident to that Hebrew date. The diary explicitly gives December 22 and a 16:00 operation beginning. The 23:00 ground action is on כ״א בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 21st 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709, not the daily daytime route. JTA dates the administrative report to December 22; the student releases were requested, not recorded as completed. 7 8

Guided reflections

  • Why must a named soldier’s daytime memorial date remain distinct from an uncertain battle clock?
  • What do requests to release students reveal about the costs of military mobilization?
