דוד בן-גוריון DAVID BEN-GURION considered the conditions of lasting independence as the main eastern effort of Operation חורב ḤOREV began. His diary joined military security to liberty, equality, immigration, science and peace.

What did he mean by lasting freedom?

The December 25 Hebrew diary states:

ᴏʀɪɢɪɴᴀʟ:

אין חירות אמתית בלי שוויון, ואין שויון בלי חירות.

ᴛʀᴀɴꜱʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴ:

There is no true liberty without equality, and no equality without liberty. 1

The reflection argued that a state’s external independence needed internal moral and intellectual freedom. Sovereignty by יהודים YEHUDIM was a responsibility to build institutions, not merely the achievement of an army’s position.

Which institutions and policies did he imagine?

His outline connected defense, rapid immigration and settlement, scientific capacity, peaceful relations and stable collective government. It also contemplated settlement in empty villages. That proposal is evidence of his program; it does not prove those villages had been voluntarily abandoned, determine ownership, or establish completed settlement that day. 2

The diary belongs to planning and reflection. It cannot serve as an enacted equality law or proof that every proposed policy was implemented.

How did the offensive develop?

The military chronology places the main eastern effort on December 25. That phase was distinct from the December 22 campaign opening and the failed early western engagements. The campaign study presents the sequence. 3

The reflection’s association with Hanukkah does not make December 25 the first candle. That sunset was still before the festival’s opening on December 26. Seasonal language must yield to the calendar rather than redating the military action. 4

How is this dated?

This is Day 392 of the 599-day civil-date series: 1948-12-25. Its daytime public route is כ״ג בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 23rd 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709; an occurrence after local sunset belongs to כ״ד בכסלו ה׳תש״ט 24th 𝑜𝑓 Kislev, AM 5709. This route identifies the daily rundown, not the clock or Hebrew date of every event it covers. The diary is headed December 25. The eastern military effort is independently assigned to that civil date by the army history; the diary’s reflections are not a formal government decree. 5 6

Guided reflections

  • How did the diary connect political independence to liberty and equality?
  • Which original record would most improve the precision of this day’s account, and what would it establish?
