Bunche reported the completed withdrawal and civilian transport, while a dated military order preceded Operation עובדה ʿUVDA.
Which figures did the mediator distinguish?
His March 1 cable gives 2,900 soldiers evacuated כ״ז בשבט ה׳תש״ט 27th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709–כ״ט בשבט ה׳תש״ט 29th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709 and 1,050 of 3,569 civilians escorted toward עזה AZA. The 1,050 is a subset. חברון ḤEVRON transport planned for March 3 was not yet a documented completion. The withdrawal and guarantees give the surrounding context.12
What did military planning establish?
The operational-order study dates planning March 1, not the March 5 advance. Morris’s account reports civilian-treatment instructions while explicitly leaving expulsions’ implementation uncertain. No family is counted expelled from an order alone.3
Were all reported passengers new arrivals?
When did Chinese recognition occur?
Klir places recognition in its March 1 entry; JTA’s March 2 issue reports recognition by the Republic of China. The original communiqué and decision date remain unheld. It was not the later People’s Republic of China. The recognition is a period-level development, not an unconditional March 1 decision.67
How is this dated?
This is Day 458 of the 599-day civil-date series, 1949-03-01. The date register’s fixed-Hebrew daytime conversion is ל׳ בשבט ה׳תש״ט 30th 𝑜𝑓 Ŝʾvat, AM 5709; after sunset it is א׳ באדר ה׳תש״ט 1st 𝑜𝑓 Adar, AM 5709. March 1 dates Bunche’s cable and the order cited by Morris; it does not date earlier withdrawals or weekend arrivals. The route identifies this daily account; it does not assign every earlier occurrence, evening event or reported total to its daytime Hebrew date.8
Guided reflections
- How can an order establish a commander’s intended policy without proving its execution?
- Why should period estimates, subsets and passenger departures remain separate?
