that protect them and treat them well, so the Ottoman state would find in them every loyalty and trustworthiness. I wish to ask al-Muqtaṭaf: Have the Arabic newspapers in Egypt and Syria paid attention to this matter, and what is your view of whether it can be carried out?

Answer by the editors of al-Muqtaṭaf:

It does not appear from the Arabic newspapers we read that they have paid special attention to this matter. Some have mentioned it only among the other news they report. The Jews who have come to Palestine so far are people of industry and commerce, as you say. They have succeeded there and secured control of most branches of trade, buying and selling. If their number increases, they will secure control of all the channels of trade and methods of industry. As for agriculture, we do not think that they will devote themselves to it, because they are not an agricultural people in the countries where they are dispersed.

Everything has become possible for people with money; nothing is impossible for them if they undertake it and resolve upon it. If the wealthy Jews of Europe agree to buy the greater part of Palestine’s land and transfer their poor brethren there, it would not be beyond their power, nor would it be impossible for those poor people to live in Palestine in comfort and prosperity. The land is spacious and its resources abundant, and it once supported several times its present population. But there is a vast distance between what a person can do and what a person actually undertakes. When people act by choice rather than compulsion, they follow the paths where they meet the least resistance. Wealthy Jews do not consider themselves compelled to transfer their brethren to Palestine, and such a transfer is no small matter. It is true that charitable and public-spirited men sometimes arise among them, such as Baron Hirsch, and spend enormous sums to transfer large numbers of their brethren to lands they purchase and settle for them. But that is rare. Moving Jews to Palestine and buying land

Analysis

Juda's question ends at the top of this page. The editors of al-Muqtaṭaf then answer in their own voice. They credit Jewish commerce and industry in ארץ ישראל EREẒ YISRAʾEL while making a broad claim that יהודים YEHUDIM are not agricultural people. They weigh possible land purchases and migration against cost and political resistance. These are the editors' expectations and generalizations, not findings that TJD has verified about Jewish work or a settled migration plan. Their answer continues onto printed page 107.
